Types of Intruder Detection Devices
Passive Infrared (PIR) detectors are the most common intruder detection device, sensing heat movement as a person moves through a room. Modern PIRs use dual-technology (combining microwave and PIR) to virtually eliminate false alarms from pets or heating vents.
Door and window contacts trigger immediately when a protected entry point is opened. They are the fastest detection technology and provide valuable early warning before an intruder has reached the interior of the property.
Shock detectors sense vibration from glass breaking or door forcing. Glass break detectors use acoustic sensors to identify the specific sound frequency of shattering glass. Both are valuable for properties with large windows or glazed doors.
Pet-Friendly Detection
Households with pets can benefit from pet-immune PIR detectors, which are calibrated to ignore heat signatures below a certain weight threshold. Modern pet-immune detectors can accommodate animals up to 25–38 kg without generating false alarms, allowing you to arm your system when you leave for work without confining your pets.
