Understanding Alarm System Grades
BS EN 50131 defines four grades of intruder alarm system. Grade 1 is the lowest level, designed for low-risk domestic properties. Grade 2 is the most common for standard domestic and small commercial installations in London. Grade 3 is required for commercial premises and high-risk or high-value properties. Grade 4 is reserved for very high-risk applications such as banks and government buildings.
For most London homes, Grade 2 is the appropriate specification and will satisfy the requirements of standard home insurance policies. Your NSI-approved engineer will confirm the required grade during the free survey.
Wired vs Wireless: Which is Better?
Neither technology is universally superior. Wired systems are generally more appropriate for new builds or major renovations where cabling can be easily concealed. Wireless systems are ideal for existing properties, period homes and rented accommodation. Modern wireless systems are reliable and meet the same grade standards as wired installations.
Do You Need Monitoring?
Most London insurers now require a monitored alarm as a condition of contents and buildings cover. Beyond insurance, monitored alarms provide a substantially faster and more reliable response to an activation than relying on neighbours or passers-by. For properties left unoccupied for extended periods — a common situation in London with second homes and frequent travel — monitoring is particularly important.
What to Ask Your Installer
Before accepting any quotation, ask: Are you NSI or SSAIB approved (and can I verify this independently)? What grade will the system be installed to? What brand of equipment do you use? What is included in the warranty? What are the monitoring contract terms and what notice is required to cancel?
