The Non-Negotiables: NSI/SSAIB Approval
Regardless of which system you choose, it should be installed by an NSI or SSAIB-approved company if you want your insurance to be protected and to retain eligibility for police response. These certifications require companies to undergo regular independent audits and install to BS EN 50131. Do not accept claims of “equivalent standards” — check the register directly at nsi.org.uk or ssaib.org.
For Most London Homeowners
For the majority of London homeowners, the best combination is a wireless or wired intruder alarm with 24/7 ARC monitoring, supported by CCTV cameras covering key entry points. This combination deters opportunist burglars, triggers a professional response if anyone does attempt entry, and provides video evidence for insurance and police purposes.
For Flats and Apartments
Flats and apartments benefit from different prioritisation. Door and window contacts on the front door, a video doorbell, and connection to professional monitoring provides strong protection without requiring extensive internal detection zones. Pet-immune PIRs in the main living area add a useful layer of internal protection.
For High-Value London Properties
Larger or higher-value properties — including semi-detached, detached homes and multi-storey townhouses — benefit from a full multi-zone alarm system with CCTV perimeter coverage, smart access control, a video doorbell, and fully-integrated monitoring. The investment in comprehensive protection is proportionate to the assets being protected.
